# Case Study 7: Just Good Enough to Proceed Cautiously

At first glance this product doesn't stand out in any dramatic way, and that's precisely the point. Buy cost is £5.60, it sells for £9.99, a profit of £1.15 a unit, just above the £1 Gate 1 floor, at a 20.5% ROI, just above the 20% Gate 2 floor. Sales run at 52 units a month, just past the 50-a-month Gate 3 floor. Every number clears its gate, but none of them clear it by much.

Financially, margins aren't impressive, but they're real. After fees, VAT, and conservative assumptions, the product remains profit-positive, with no reliance on price increases, Buy Box manipulation, or best-case scenarios to make the numbers work.

## Demand and Competition (Gates 4–6)

Rank moves in a range well inside the Gate 4 band, with no evidence of artificial spikes, forced promotions, or sudden demand events. Sales velocity supports the price level without relying on short-term anomalies.

Competition exists but isn't chaotic. The offer count sits at 8, under the Gate 6 ceiling of 10, sellers aren't cycling in and out aggressively, and pricing pressure appears controlled rather than hostile. Amazon hasn't appeared on the Buy Box in the last 90 days, clear of Gate 5.

## What This Product Does Not Do

This isn't a product that excites spreadsheets or screenshots. There's no exceptional ROI headline, no dramatic sales graph, and no sense that this will scale aggressively without effort. Because every gate is cleared narrowly rather than comfortably, there's limited margin buffer if fees increase or prices soften.

There are also no protective advantages. This isn't a gated niche, a low-competition listing, or a temporarily mispriced opportunity. It survives because it's stable, not because it's clever.

## Decision Outcome

This product passes all seven gates, but only narrowly. It doesn't earn a confident yes, it qualifies for a controlled, cautious entry: buying a small quantity, testing sell-through speed, and monitoring price behaviour closely before committing further capital. This is the kind of product where discipline matters more than optimism.

## Core Lesson

This is what a real "yes" actually looks like. Not exciting, not obvious, not risk-free, and clearing every threshold by a small margin rather than a wide one. Most sustainable Amazon businesses are built on products like this, quiet, boring, survivable decisions made consistently over time. If your idea of a good buy always looks impressive, you're probably taking more risk than you realise.
