# 9.1 Setting Your SKU Format

Before you send anything to Amazon, set up your SKU format once under **Settings → SKU Format**. This is the pattern SourceSheets uses to generate a SKU every time you send a Buy List product to your Amazon inventory, so you don't need to invent one by hand for every product.

### Building the format

Every SKU is prefixed with **SS-**, then built from tokens you drag or type into place: Supplier, Cost of Goods, Sell Price, ASIN, Quantity, and Date. Most sellers only need Supplier and Cost of Goods, that's enough to identify a batch at a glance without the SKU turning into a mess.

### Staying inside Amazon's limit

Amazon caps SKUs at 40 characters. The **Preview & Limits** section shows a worst-case length meter, the longest a SKU could ever be with your current template, every token at its maximum configured length, not just the length of the examples shown. If it doesn't fit, SourceSheets won't let you save the template.

Two sliders control the risk here: **Supplier length limit** caps how much of a supplier's name gets used (supplier names are the longest, least predictable part of a SKU), and **Price digits limit** caps how many digits your cost and price fields can contribute. Pull both down if you're using a lot of tokens and running close to the 40-character ceiling.

### Example

With Supplier and Cost of Goods selected, a real SKU looks like `SS-BRIGHTHOME-460`, supplier name, then cost in pence. Once you're happy with the preview, save it. Every future send to Amazon inventory uses this format automatically, you won't be asked to build a SKU by hand again.
